After using the rotring Rapid Pro for several years I decided to try another pencil for daily writing and usage. I went for the PENCIL by Kusatz made in Austria which has been on my wishlist for quite some years. The relatively high price of 90$ deterred me to buy it for a long time.

The companies eponym and product designer Bernd Kusatz, who’s also an IT specialist, is a huge fan of Apple products and follows the design philosophy established by Dieter Rams which becomes clear while looking at their products. Kusatz focus is on high quality long-lasting products with clear forms and easy handling. They produce 100% in Austria, where all used materials are from as well. Aside from the PENCIL Kusatz designs MacBook cases, USB-Sticks and further utilities.

The PENCIL is a super clean pen for everyday writing and comes in two color ways, in silver and gold. I clearly prefer silver.
With a length of 17,3 cm it is unusual long what appears strange in the first place but as soon as you hold it in your hand you feel that the pen is very balanced and offers exceptional handling. Due to the length the pen does not fit in common pen cases. What supports the exceptional handling is the diameter of 0,8 cm and the weight of only 18 grams which is the half of the rotring Rapid Pro. The PENCIL works for left and right hander the same.

The pen comes with a fine blue replaceable cartridge by Schneider which offers 2 km of writing. All in all the writing experience on paper feels soft and smooth.

FORM

PENCIL by Kusatz

The PENCIL is made from one single block of aluminium which keeps the pen always cool. The aluminum is finely milled, laser engraved and glas bead blasted for finish that feels like touching a MacBook. At the top you can find a small and subtle logo of Kusatz which is easy overseen in the beginning.
With it’s radical minimalism the pen relinquishes on any further functionalities than writing. This means that it does not have a clipper and no button to retract and protect the mine.

CONCLUSION

Using the PENCIL is a very nice experience and I adore the lightweight and clean design of the pen with it’s minimal focus. The PENCIL is the perfect combination of an everyday product and a design object. To emphasize are materials and the outstanding handling of the pen.
